When is the Best Time for a Family Vacation to Arizona?
Arizona's climate varies significantly depending on the region, but in general, September to May are the best times for a family vacation. During these seasons, the weather is warm but not scorching, and outdoor activities are much more enjoyable. The summer is always an option too, but I would plan to be poolside most of the trip if so (a bit hot for me lol).
If you're planning to visit the northern regions, such as Sedona or the Grand Canyon, summer can be a great time as temperatures are cooler than in the southern cities. Winter, on the other hand, is ideal in my opinion for exploring the desert landscapes around Phoenix and Tucson when the temperatures are fantastic.
Top Attractions for a Family Vacation in Arizona
Sedona's Red Rock Country
Sedona’s stunning red rock formations make it a must-visit destination. Enjoy scenic drives, family hikes, and even Jeep tours through the unique terrain. Don’t miss a stop at Slide Rock State Park, where natural rock water slides provide hours of fun for kids and adults alike.
Phoenix Zoo
Have kids? They tend to be very fascinated by zoos and this is one of the best family-friendly attractions in Arizona. The Phoenix Zoo is home to over 3,000 animals and offers interactive exhibits, splash pads, and a safari train. It’s a great way to spend a day in the heart of Phoenix.
Grand Canyon National Park
No trip to Arizona is complete without a visit to the world-famous Grand Canyon. You can take your family on a guided tour or if you are like me, explore on your own, the many hiking trails that offer breathtaking views of the canyon’s vast expanse. There are a variety of trails that differ in difficulty, so it is the perfect place to go for both views and a challenging adventure if that is what you are looking for.
Montezuma Castle National Monument
Located near Camp Verde, Montezuma Castle is a well-preserved ancient cliff dwelling that offers an intriguing glimpse into Native American history. The short trails and educational displays make it a great stop for families. This is definitely a cool sighting, but I wouldn't drive too far out of your way just to see this, but if it is close to your path it is definitely worth seeing.
Best Hiking Spots for Families in Arizona
Devil’s Bridge | Sedona
This popular trail leads to a stunning natural sandstone arch, providing one of Sedona’s most Instagram-worthy views. The hike is moderate, making it a more family-friendly choice.
Pinnacle Peak Park | Scottsdale
A great option for families with younger kids, Pinnacle Peak offers a manageable trail with scenic views of the Sonoran Desert and plenty of spots to rest along the way.
Camelback Mountain | Phoenix
One of Arizona’s most iconic hikes, Camelback Mountain offers challenging trails with rewarding views of the Phoenix skyline. Families with older children or active teens will enjoy this adventure. - There are extremely steep hiking parts on this, so I would not recommend it for children, but if you are up to it, it is definitely worth it.
Saguaro National Park | Tucson
This park is home to Arizona’s iconic saguaro cacti and offers a variety of trails for all skill levels. The Valley View Overlook Trail is perfect for families, offering incredible views without being too strenuous.
Secret Tip:
If you enjoy playing disc golf, they have a variety of disc golf courses in the mountains, so you can get a fun game in and a hike out of it at the same time! Some of my favorite memories of playing disc golf came from throwing down a mountain in Arizona (disc flies so far, so for me who personally is not the best, that makes it more fun!). Highly recommend it for any disc golf player.
Personal Favorite Restaurants That are Family-Friendly in Arizona
No family vacation is complete without finding a local cuisine. Here are some of my recommendations for top dining spots that are perfect for families:
Kasai Japanese Steakhouse | Scottsdale
Kasai is by far the most enjoyable restaurant I have ever been to! The chefs are top-notch and hilarious. It is not just a typical teppanyaki dining experience where chefs only prepare meals right at your table. Everyone will love the entertaining cooking show, and will enjoy the high-quality dishes like hibachi steak and Lobster - definitely recommend having their sushi as well. Every food on the menu is top-notch and makes for a perfect last-day meal and experience for a perfect end to your family vacation in Arizona!
KO’s Sports Bar and Grill | Casa Grande
KO’s is another gem as they provide a variety of high-quality meals and are a great environment if there's a sports game you want to watch. Their menu features family-friendly options like burgers, wings(they make the best wings I have ever had), pizzas, fajitas, and plenty more, along with live sports everywhere you look to keep everyone entertained.
This modern Latin restaurant serves dishes like tableside guacamole and smoky grilled meats in a chic, family-friendly atmosphere. Only been here once, but I remember it being delicious.
The Mission | Scottsdale
Additional Restaurants to Try for People With a Longer Stay in Arizona
Joe’s Farm Grill | Gilbert
Located on a working farm, Joe’s Farm Grill offers fresh, locally sourced burgers, salads, and shakes. The outdoor seating and relaxed vibe make it a great spot for families.
Elote Café | Sedona
Known for its bold Mexican-inspired flavors, Elote Café is a must-visit. Their Elote (Mexican street corn) appetizer is one of my favorites and some may say legendary and perfect for sharing.
Conclusion: Arizona Family Vacation
Arizona has everything you need for a perfect family vacation—stunning natural wonders, exciting outdoor adventures, and delicious dining options. Whether you're hiking the trails of Sedona, marveling at the Grand Canyon, or enjoying a hibachi dinner at Kasai, your trip to Arizona will create memories your family will treasure forever.
Planning Tip: Book your accommodations early, especially if you're visiting during peak seasons. Consider family-friendly Airbnb rentals near major attractions for convenience and comfort(bonus points for ones with a pool!!).
